We are currently usuing version 5.1 of vCenter and ESXi. During a DR test yesterday, we mounted a replicated LUN to our VMware cluster at our DR site. I then chose to add the LUN. I was given the option to keep the signature or resignature the LUN. I chose to keep the existing signature. The LUN was mounted but only to one server in the cluster. Is it required to resignature the LUN in order for other servers in the cluster to see it? Or, do you need to add the LUN seperately on each host in the cluster?
Question about mounting a replicated LUN in vCenter
Virtual Center Service Will not start
Hi
We are currently having an issue where our VirtualCenter Server service is stuck between starting and started. I have looked at a few suggestions on here and cannot seem to resolve this issue!
The message received is below
The description for Event ID 1000 from source VMware VirtualCenter Server cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:

Cloned VM gets corrupt over and over again.
Hello
I am currently facing a strange problem. If I clone our GoldenImage VM (used for View Deployment) it gets corrupt.
The cloned VM (Win7) mostly starts successfully untill I start clicking around a little bit and it detects some missing Files. Some programs are unable to run and sometimes I get error messages that some .dll files were missing.
After restarting the cloned VM mostly check disk runs (CHKDSK) and it detects a lot of missing and corrupt files.
So the whole cloned VM is very faulty and unstable.
I tried to clone this VM different times but its always corrupt.
Someone got an Idea whats wrong there?
vcenter 5.5u1 appliance update - 2.5 hrs and counting
I jumped on the u1 release today by upgrading my 5.5 appliance in my new prod farm that is not yet deployed. This update must have a lot of database updates as I'm seeing a lot of growth in the snapshot files especially the data disk.. hoping this sucker gets done today!
Cannot start second vCenter 5.5 in linked mode
Hello,
I have performed a clean install of two 5.5 vCenters. The end goal is to link them both via linked mode and eventually pair them using SRM. The first one (called VC55.KERSMASH.local) installed correctly and is working fine. The second vCenter (DR8SP1VC55.KERSMASH.local) installed without errors, however the vCenter server service refused to start. I have checked the VPX logs and as you can see it's moaning about an untrusted root certificate. As you may be aware, the install process requires accepting the certificates from the first vCenter which I have done, so I can't understand what is causing this issue.
1. The install method I have used for installing SSO on the 2nd vCenter is "vCenter Single Sign-On for an additional vCenter Server in an existing site
2. Both vCenters are 5.5
Any thoughts on what I can try?? As far as I can tell SSO is the root of all evil, placed on this earth to plague mankind, so I'm leaning towards SSO being the root cause of this issue also.

Adding vceneter server to AD authentication
Hi ALL,
I tried lot of docs and KB articles , but I am not able to add vcenter server 5.0 to AD for authentication users .
Vcenter server is already part of domain . can any one please help .
Vcenter task detail
I have a vcenter event indicating a user reconfigured a virtual machine. In vcenter events and tasks there does not appear to have detail about the exact task. How do I get the details about what was reconfigured in this task?
Change host management IP addresses
I may have a need to change the IP addresses of my management interfaces on my ESXi 5.x hosts. Unfortunately I thought it was a good idea to add all of them to Vcenter using their IP address, not hostname. So I guess A) what is the best way to change their IP and keep them connected to vCenter and B) should I switch to DNS names in the future? I kind of thought not having to depend on DNS resolution would be nice which is why I used IP, but I suppose I could use host files on my Vcenter for that.
TIA.
Single Sign On upgrade issue 5.1 to 5.5
Hi,
Has anyone encountered the below error when trying to update SSO to 5.5? I have downloaded the latest install package 5.5 update 1 but I keep getting the error. The server is a 2008 SP2 machine.
Product: vCenter Single Sign-On -- Error 1923. Service 'VMware Directory Service' (VMWareDirectoryService) could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services.
The things I have tried so far are below after reading various things online.
I have tried using different domain admin accounts
Rebooting the server
Starting the Windows Error Reporting service
Disabling the VMware Converter Services
Disabling the AV
I have also seen the article below but which has a similar error that mentions certain ports should be free, however version 5.1 was installed without any issues and has been working for months.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Graham
Adding Video card to host to be used by the guest OS
Hello,
I have a system configured with ESXi 5.5 and i need to have the guest OS use the video card in the Host. The Host is a Sabertooth X79, the Video card is a Nvidia GT610 and I need to be able to access the GPU for graphics rendering. I have 5 VMs installed that will all be running graphics and i need to be able to use the GPU for all of them. Is there a way to do this?
Thanks
vCenter Server 5.5 Update 1 | 11 MAR 2014 | Build 1623101
Running 5.5 vcenter / ESXI hosts with vDS and I need to run the Update 1 to fix a few items. Since I am running vDS is there anything I need to be aware of for the update? Or do I just mount the ISO and run the install and it will pick up on what I have and update accordingly?
Can vCenter 5.5 U1 manage ESXi 5.0 hosts?
According to VMware Interoperability Guide, looks like vCenter 5.5 U1 can manage 5.5U1 hosts only.
This is a major problem for me. I just opened a case with VMware, but can someone confirm this?
Thanks
Cannot power on VM after restore.
Reason: Failed to lock the file.
Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/52e2368e-691b2530-9f67-00145e17a7be/D1-POC/D1-POC_1.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.
Not sure why this is happening. Can anyone help me?
Thanks,
vcenter appliance upgrade from 5.5b to 5.5.1 results in all inventory being EMPTY!
I used a previously good method in the appliance management console to check for the upgrade then upgrade today. After a lengthy upgrade, I logon and find all of my previous inventory gone including the vcenter server object. Luckily I have a snapshot I can fall back on. Opening another ticket that I hope vmware doesn't sit on for a week like my last one.
Grrrrrr
VSAN Transport
Hi,
maybe this is not the correct forum to ask, but since the beta forums are closed i don´t know where to move it. So if there is a new vsan area, moderators, feel free to move my question ;-)
So...i just installed a VSAN Cluster with ESXi55U1 (fresh) to my testlab. I am wondering about how the actual data is transported. I guess it is neither iSCSI nor NFS or any other common method, even no common VMware-like method like NFC. So i tried a little bit around. If you do a "esxcli vsan network list" you get the multicast addresses and if you install tcpdump via vma you are even able to scan this traffic with for example "sudo tcpdump -d dst host 224.1.2.3 or dst host 224.2.3.4". But then again i guess (and as Cormac also wrote in his blog) this is only little communication of discovery and metadata stuff. So i wonder where goes the *real* data? An "esxcli network ip connection list" with a grep for "vsan" shows some tcp connections regarding vsansoapserver on port 8080 and some regarding vsanutil on port 2233.
So....is anyone at VMware able to answer how VSAN works "under the hood" - how VSAN really communicates? And most important: How is the actual real data *transported*?
Best regards,
Joerg

I already started the service "VMWare virtualcenter management webservices" and don't have another system or software using the "port 80" but "performance overview continue "page cannot be displayed"
Question: I need service restart: "vmware virtualcenter server" to show graphs the performance overview?
Thanks

Pass user credentials to VM console
I would like to provide my users with direct links to the virtual machine consoles so that we can have a dashboard of sorts with our different VMs that they can access. I have copied out the URL for each VM by opening the consoles through vsphere web client, however it seems that in order to access the VM consoles you must first authenticate against vcenter. Is there any way around this or any way to pass credentials in the URL. We have single-sign on enabled and my users are able to log into the vsphere web client using their windows credentials. My goal is to make it so they don't have to login to vsphere prior to clicking to links to the vm's. When i try to follow a link to one of the VM console without being signed into vcenter i get the error message show in the attached picture. If i follow the link after authenticating into vcenter it works fine.
Thanks.
Web Client login with "Use Windows Session credentials" error
Hi,
I have been trying to configure vCenter Server appliance 5.5.0b (suse).
I've created a user in bash console and added permissions to it with full access to vcenter server (with propagation), added it to Administrators and Users group etc.
When I manually enter credentials to log in it lets me in, but when I check "Use Windows Session credentials" box it produces a following error:
"The authentication server returned an unexpected error: ns0:RequestFailed: IDM threw unexpected error during authentication :: Native platform error [code: 1213][ERROR_INVALID_SERVICENAME][]. The error may be caused by a malfunctioning identity source."
I have the same credentials on my computer as in vcenter (both without AD configured) [it works with vcenter on windows 2008 server].
I have heard that it could be the issue of missing dns reverse lookup, but I have it working perfectly.
vCenter server and dns server are on the same subnet.
i know there already is a discussion about that error, but solution is not adequate (i am using american-english characters and as i said before - it works on different vcenter).
Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance!
querying the vCenter DB....
OK, I need to get a list of all VM's in all Datacenters in vCenter and the folder they are in....
Here's my query
WITH x AS
(
SELECT DISTINCT name, id
FROM VPX_ENTITY
)
Select x.Name AS ParentFolderName, ve.NAME
From VPX_ENTITY ve
JOIN x ON x.id = ve.Parent_Id
WHERE TYPE_ID = 0 AND PARENT_ID <> 1144 AND x.ID <> 196
ORDER By ParentFolderName, ve.NAME ASC
That gives me a good list of ALL VM's but in their Parent Folder. Parent Folder is really the final folder it is in and doesn't show the folder the "Parent Folder" is in and what folder that is in and ultimately doesn't show what "Datacenter" they are in.
Here whet the folder tree looks like in vcenter...
Datacenter Earth
SQL
SQ2005
SQ2008
Yomama
SQ2012
Oracle
ORA9i
ORA10g
Datacenter Mars
IIS
Websphere
Sharepoint
SP2007
SP2010
Jomama
So, the output I am looking for, for the SQL VM called Yomama should look like this as the sql query output...
"Datacenter Earth" \ SQL \ SQL2008 \ Yomama
The output for the Sharepoint VM called Jomama will look like this....
"Datacenter Mars" \ Sharepoint \ SP2010 \ Jomama
Anyone have any idea on how to get the absolute path of a VM like this?
Thanks
