Hi. I'm trying to test and learn about vCenter Operations Suite so i downloaded the free evaluation version that is in the OVF package form. After downloading and attempting to import it via vSphere client on my virtualized ESX 5i hypervisor (evaluation running in VM Workstation) i get an error below. What am i doing wrong?

"The OVF package requires support for vApps with multiple VMs"

"Details Line 68: Unsupported element 'VirtualSystemCollection'

I am in a total training environment, no AD server or nothing fancy. A few years ago i was able to deploy vCenter 4 successfully, but this version seems different, installation wise. Thanks again.

is it possible to Monitor the HDD Space for a VM throu the vcenter? If the HDD of the VM get´s full i want to receive a Alert via SNMP or Email from the vcenter Server. I didnt found any Setting which gave me the Option to do this. Any Idea´s`?

To start off, I am a student in a networking program that has recently implemented a virtualized infrastructure using a solution from vmware (obviously since im posting this here) to start teaching the basic of a virtualized infrastructure. There is two teachers and they have told me to solve this problem. We have 5 datastores that are connected to two of our ESXi 5.1 host as iSCSI targets that set up on Windows Server 2012 using windows software SCSI service that are running on two 12-bay Poweredge with a perc controller using RAID 5

To start what happened before the problem was back at the beginning of the semester we were having problems with creating and storing VMs on the datastore. I did some troubleshooting and came to find that we had a failed drive. so we ordered a replacement, it came in and tried to rebuild it but with no success. Come to find that another drive was starting to fail before the rebuild and then had failed during the rebuild. so a order was placed in for that drive too. Then the drive came in a few days later and put it in to rebuilt it and got everything started up and no blinking error lights on the drives but we were experiencing the datastores not wanting to connect.

The problem I am faced with is that two of the datastores that are on one of the poweredge servers, are grayed out with inactive appended to their name. The Event Viewer on the server gives me this error.

the iSCSI software service sees the initiator connected to the target

when i look at the storage adapter on the host under the configuration tab, i see that they are connected.

so in my head everything should work, but there's something I am missing. i don't really have the time to comb through forums or videos as i am now behind on some of my assignments. If anyone has dealt with this problem and has an answer please let me know. and if I have forgotten anything let me know or if more information is needed feel free to ask.

I am trying to join vCenter Server Appliance 5.5 to Windows Server 2012 AD domain authentication but I am getting following error message

AD Authentication settings

Error: Invalid hostname. FQDN is required for joining a domain.

DNS is OK, vCSA can resolve both domain and domain controller host name.

Same DC, and parameters work just fine with 5.1.

Anyone else sees this?

We have vCenter appliance 5.1.0. and I want to set up email alerts.  Our exchange server is the in cloud, no email server in the office.

It looks to me that vCenter is setup only to relay email, meaning no username and password, just server name and sending email address.

Does the vCenter appliance have a SMTP server that I can enable?

I connect to vcenter via vshere client, I go to vcenter server setting and only see server name and sending email address.

Thoughts on how I can send out alerts?

Hi all, I come across one of my VM which have the warning message"Virtual machine disk consolidation is needed " and I check and there's no existing snapshots under SnapShot manager.

When I browse the datastore I a lot of vmdk files such as the below. How do I properly proceed with clearing up ? It's a production server so would it be safe for me to power off ?

I have a quick question,

I am looking to use vCenter for eval here in our office, with some newly installed VMs on multiple servers. If I add them to the vCenter management, can i physically relocate the VM servers outside of the network that the vCenter server is on and not have any adverse issues and still manage them through the individual vSphere clients?

I am trying to upgrade our Vcenter appliance and and having issues.  I had problems with an upgrade in the past and had the remove the hmac files.  We have another Vcenter installation that upgraded yesterday without issue.  I was able to restore to a snapshot and get Vcenter back up.  I have found several posts concerning adding another disk to Vcenter server but this errors I am getting don't match.

Would it be better to do a complete new installation of 5.1 Update 2 and restore?  I have never attempted this and not sure how you back up the appliance and how licensing will work.

After download virtual appliance (*.OVA) from vmware website, it can not deploy from my local drive and show error "could not access file:  XXXXXXXX-system.vmdk. couldn't connect to the server".

Have already tested some ova files. Could anyone help?

I have vCenter 4.1 and need to upgrade to vCenter 5.5. My vCenter 4.1 is running on Windows Server 2008 SP2 and SQL Server 2008 SP3 database.

The requirement is to have a new server installed with Windows Server 2012 and SQL Server 2012 for the vCenter 5.5.

Question is how can I achieve the upgrade of vCenter 4.1 to 5.5 on a different server? is this possible? if yes what are the things to take care off since it's not an in server upgrade.

I added VSAN to my cluster to trial it (looks like potentially a great product btw), however after I removed the hosts and the disks and disabled VSAN in the cluster, I am getting the following Issue at the cluster level:

"vsan datastore datastore1 in cluster **** in datacenter **** does not have capacity".

Obviously datastore1 does not exist anymore as VSAN is now disabled. How can I get rid of the message?

I know that for plugin loading vcenter uses an instance of the locally installed internet explorer.

So, recently we updated our backup solution (Tivoli Flashcopy Manager for vmware) which also has a plugin to be integrated in vcenter. After the update though, in my windows machine (with IE 10) I cannot load the interface of the application through VCenter (with normal browser it works fine). The problem is that It stays blank, with only the CSS being rendered. On other computers with IE 10 it works fine. I guessed that something is wrong with my cache, I cleared everything but the problem persists.

My question is, is there anything else that needs to be done to fix this issue? Maybe cleaning something else from the vmware's side, or do some setting in IE? Also, except from the plugin application, does each vcenter version support some specific Internet Explorer versions or it doesn't make any difference for vcenter which IE you have installed?

I wasn't really sure how to title this question. But is there a product out there that has the ability to see dependencies and communications between virtual machine guests and based on that migrate them to the same host for improved communications performance? I know you could manually create rules, but I'm looking for an automated solution. I'm thinking of large environments with multiple clusters and multi-tiered applications across multiple virtual machine guests.
