centralized licensing authority is that possible?

$

Hi all,

we have a vmware environment where we have 6 vCenter servers around the globe with related vsan, horizon view, Connection servers, composer servers, vcsa and pscs.

We have on our portal one big licenses for each service and if needed another team in our company cuts out of that license what we need and creates a new key.

I am a little bit tired of asking for those keys, as we have separate ones for each site. So my idea was to cut out the total amount which we use globally and put those license on some centralized instance which just hast that one key and provides the needed seats to the related sites. (More or less like vrealize cluster does)

I have searched now for a while but was not able to find anything related to that. To me that whole licensing is a monster and i have no idea if that centralized solution explained above is possible at all.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Cannot type (using keyboard) on vSphere Web Client

This is very strange:

I just deployed a new vSphere 6.0 VCSA and am using the webclient (currently Firefox on Win 10) to configure the system.  When I create a new object, there are dialog boxes that require me to input data; for example "New Distributed Port Group" prompts me to input the port group name.  The problem is that the web client is not receiving my keystrokes.  The workaround is everytime I run into a dialog box requiring keystrokes (such as inputting an object name, etc.) I have to click the Windows start button (changing focus away from the browser window) then re-click on the input box and begin typing and it works normally.... until the next dialog box is displayed where I have to click away, then return to finish entering data.  I've seen this before on another completely separate system but never chased down the solution.

Anyone else seen this and have a recommendation?

VCSA 6.5 Management - Performance charts "no data to display"

I have problems with performance charts in VCSA 6.5 management after upgrade to 6.5.0a.

Upgrade to 6.5.0d didn't resolve the problem.

In "Networking", "CPU and Memory" and "Database" sections there should be perf charts, but instead I get "No data to display".

In vSphere Web Client there are no problems with charts.

Does anyone has the same problems?

Please see attachment.

vCenter multiple sessions of same user

Hi,

I have a "problem" with the sessions management of the vCenter since a very long time. Currently I have the VCSA 6.5.0.12000 Build Number 7119157

When I have a look at the sessions I see some user having a lot of sessions, some of these sessions are idle some are active. Why are there so much sessions of the same users? These people just connect to some VMs (VMRC) and nothing more.  As mentioned IP address it's 127.0.0.1 or the external IP address of vCenter server itself.

Regards Wolfgang

Error adding host to vCenter - AdapterServer Not Initialized

After purchasing vSphere Essentials I was able to add one of my ESXi boxes as a host to vCenter, however when adding the second it fails with the oh so specific "general system error".  In the hostd.log on the offending ESXi box it gives the error "AdapterServer caught exception: Not initialized".  I am unable to find any reference to that specific AdapterServer exception anywhere.

Has anyone experienced this error or perhaps be able to offer some guidance?

I've attached the relevant part of the hostd log file.

Thanks,

Keith

Hello,

i just upgraded my test environment to vCenter 6.7 and tested the new Backup Task, but it don't work.

In /var/log/vmware/applmgmt/backup.log i found:

ERROR: BackupManager encountered an exception: While reading from '/etc/systemd/network/10-eth0.network' [line  7]: option 'gateway' in section 'Network' already exists

And the file looks like that:

root@srv10 [ /var/log/vmware/applmgmt ]# cat /etc/systemd/network/10-eth0.network

[Match]

Name=eth0

[Network]

Gateway=2a02:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx::250

Gateway=192.168.99.1

Address=2a02:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx::20/64

Address=192.168.99.20/24

IPv6AcceptRouterAdvertisements=false

DHCP=no

[DHCP]

UseDNS=false

It must be a bug in the backup function...

GlobalPermissions in ELM with 3 VCSA 6.5

Hello,

I have 3 vcs in ELM where I have set a global permissions for a specific AD-group.

My problem is that after loging in one of those vc I only see two of them.

The missing vc is always the same one.(vc3)

I checke all three vcs (with an other user) if I can see the permission listed in the permissions overview-tab - and it is present.

I am also eble to login to the missing "vc3" using the credentials from the added AD-group.

Can it be caused because of the distance the vc are located to each other? (vc1-> vc2 about 120km     vc1/vc2 -> 450km)

Has someone an idea?

Thanks

HTML and Flash Web Clients run as different users

$

We've written a vCenter plug-in to run in the HTML web client and the Flash web client.  We keep a small amount of data on disk on the vCenter.

The problem is that that HTML client is running as vsphere-ui and the Flash client is running as vsphere-client.

Previously we stored our data at /storage/vsphere-client, but now we can't access that data from the HTML client because of the

directory permissions.  Currently I'm using Spring injection to store the HTML data at /storage/vsphere-ui and the Flash data at /storage/vsphere-client.

Is there a way that I could have a directory that both clients could access?

Hi,

we plan to order two Dell PowerEdge for ESXi 6.5 standard edition. One of the hosts will host the vcsa 6.5.

Is it possible to migrate a VM from one host to the other while running?

Note: The hosts will only have their local raid sets and no fc/iscsi san between them. And the VM is not allowed to be powered off.

How to exclude VM from HA calculation

$

Hi,

I use "cluster resource percentage" on VCSA 6.5 and ESX 5.5 hosts.

I did "VM overrides" and disabled everything on multiple VMs.

After that, the vsphere HA calculation hasn't changed in cluster summary tab. Blue bar still shows same amount of HA resources consumed.

Any other way to exclude VM from that HA calculation ?

thanks

vCenter HTML5 plugin.xml icon

$

I'm converting my existing Flex plug-in to HTML 5.  I've eliminated the Flex portion and implemented the HTML5 portion.

Everything works great except for one thing.  I can't get an icon to show up.  In my plugin.xml file for the <icon> tag

I've tried

../../assets/images/Company-Icon-N-16x16.png

../assets/images/Company-Icon-N-16x16.png

/assets/images/Company-Icon-N-16x16.png

/vsphere-client/company-war-4.0.0-SNAPSHOT/assets/images/Company-Icon-N-16x16.png

company-war-4.0.0-SNAPSHOT//assets/images/Company-Icon-N-16x16.png

/vsphere-client/company-war-4.0.0-SNAPSHOT/assets/images/Company-Icon-N-16x16.png

Here's a plugin.xml snippet:

<pluginid="com.company.MyCompany">

    <!-- Global Config view -->

   <extensionid="com.company.views.global.GlobalSolidFireJS">

      <extendedPoint>vise.global.views</extendedPoint>

      <object>

         <name>Company Configuration</name>

         <icon>../../assets/images/Company-Icon-N-16x16.png</icon>

         <componentClassclassName="com.vmware.vsphere.client.htmlbridge.HtmlView">

            <object>

                <root>

                    <url>/vsphere-client/company-war-4.0.0-SNAPSHOT/index.html</url>

                </root>

            </object>

         </componentClass>

      </object>

      <metadata>

            <privilege>Datastore.AllocateSpace,Datastore.Browse,Datastore.Delete,Datastore.DeleteFile,Datastore.FileManagement,Datastore.Move,Datastore.Rename</privilege>

      </metadata>

   </extension>

What's a programmer got to do to get any icon to show up?

I would prefer NOT to have a .properties file, just the path to the file.

I also noticed that the HTML5 samples in the SDK have both src/main/locale and src/main/webapp/locales/en_US directories with property files in each.

This is confusing to me.

vCenter 5.5 Server Appliance - AD Authentication Settings

$

Good day guys,

I am currently configuring a vCenter 5.5 Server Appliance and I had a question regarding the Active Directory Authentication that I can't seem to find in any of the documentation.

I currently have a Windows Server vCenter implementation but I would like to explore the feasibility of using the Server Appliance instead, which brings me to my question:

Previously in my Windows Server implementation, the Windows OS was joined to the domain and had access to Active Directory at the OS level.

When configuring the Server Appliance AD Authentication settings, it asks for domain Administrator credentials - I am wondering if this is a one-time requirement just to join the appliance to the domain or if this would be accessing the AD in an ongoing manner?

I will likely require a service account if it is the latter but I wanted to confirm this before pursuing any solutions.

Thank you for any assistance you guys can provide

Added additional ESXi 5.5 hosts, now have intermittent network problems with VMs

$

Environment:

10 of the latest 5.5 7967571 ESXi hosts running on UCS blades, imaged from newer install iso, and updated through vCenter.

10 more 7967571 ESXi hosts running on UCS blades, imaged from an older install iso (2015 I believe), and updated recently through vCenter and added to the same cluster as the other 10.

We had intermittent network connectivity problems as follows after migrating some VM's to the new hosts:

Some VM's could not be contacted by the monitoring systems outside their vSwitch.

Some VM's could ping other VM's inside their subnet, but only the ones with lower IP addresses (could ping .26, but not .211 for instance).

Some VM's could not map their NFS shares in different vSwitch on different subnet, but could still reach DNS servers.

Sometimes a soft reboot from inside a VM would fix the problem with that VM.

Sometimes a power cycle through vCenter would fix the problem with that VM.

Sometimes migrating the VM back to the old ESXi hosts would fix the problem with that VM.

UCS firmware was at 2.2.3f on the new problem UCS blades. Changed them all to 2.2.2c to be consistent with the others.

"enic" device firmware showed 4.0(1f) after the update on them (was 4.0(2f) before the downgrade), while firmware on the other non-problematic ones is 2.2(2c) and the enic driver is 2.1.2.71. Since yesterday, the enic device firmware on the new hosts is now showing as 2.2(2c) - I think this was caused by the SA rebooting all the new hosts after updating the firmware on the chassis.

"enic" driver is 1.4.2.15c after the downgrade on the new ESXi hosts. It was 2.1.2.71 before the downgrade.

The downgrade to the new hosts seems to have stabilized the environment, but we are worried there might be an interoperability problem somewhere. We are scared to update all the hosts to the new firmware, because we don't know if the problem was due to interoperability or due to a problem with the newer firmware (2.2.3f) that came with the new installer iso for the hosts.

Does anyone know how to troubleshoot intermittent network problems caused by adding new ESXi hosts to a cluster? Where can we review logs that might indicate other problems that we aren't seeing a direct impact at the moment?

Thanks,

George

Autodeploy vcsa 6.5 trouble

Hello,

I am trying to configure the Auto Deploy service in our instance of VCSA 6.5 but it does not work at all.
I'm using a Dell server (R630), PXE booting is done successfully, as well as loading the iPXE undionly.kpxe.vmw-hardwired image from our TFTP server.

Looking at the rbd-cgi.log file on the VCSA, I see messages like this:

Upgrade & Migrate from External PSC to Embedded

$

0

Scan reading through the vCenter 6.7 release notes - a key thing that caught my eye was that we no longer have to worry about complex external PSC and load balancer configurations to get linked mode - Hooray!

I have two questions about it if anyone knows….

1. To move from a vSphere 6.0 multi-site, 2 x PSC’s in an HA config with custom certs + 1 vCenter per site config, to the single embedded vCenter 6.7 per site model, am I right in thinking that we’d have to complete a full upgrade to 6.7 first, and then deploy a new embedded appliance, and backup and restore vcenter into the new embedded appliance?

Seems pretty brutal, but I really do despise the whole PSC / HA / HLB setup, would be glad to get away from it.

2. Aside from SSO performance, what would be the downsides of moving from an external to an embedded model with 6.7?

Thanks
