vCenter Inventory Service won't start

$

Hello,

The issue I have is with a newly built vCenter server. Having installed and configured the individual components, the vCenter Inventory service won't start. The event log entry 7024 is logged with the message advising that the service terminated with service-specific error Incorrect function.

The most suitable KB article was the following - VMware KB: vCenter Inventory Service fails to start and cannot back up the Inventory Service database . However that failed to make any difference.

Has anyone come across this problem before, and knows how to rectify it, (aside from scrapping it and starting again).

Many Thanks

Hello everybody,

I need to install Data recovery plugin for vsphere but my company bought the vcenter license a few years ago and don't know what is our vmware account ?

Do you think if there is a way to get our account informations if we provide our licenses numbers to VMware ?

Thank you in advance !

Deleting / Removing a datastore

Hi, we are sun-setting a SAN, and therefore removing a bunch a datastores. I've read in an article that we need to do some volume Masking.

Is that really neccessary? We've removed all vms and data from these datastores. These datastores are virtually empty.

Can we just delete these datastores and then un-presenting those LUNs from the SAN?

Thanks.

I cant find the global.properties file in my virtual center server. even ODBC doest contains the information i want...

Is there any file which contains all the information about my SQL database for virtualcenter. for example which db instance is used by virtual center, which remote database is attached and what is the name of that remote server.  the users name which has been used to attach the database.

My second question, is there any file which contains all the configuration of virtualcenter ? if my virtualcenter dies i can use that file to build/install a new one.

"Unclear" alarms

I have a host reporting a hardware alert.  The alarm has been cleared so looking at the inventory of the cluster everything looks healthy.  Looking at the host hardware though shows 2 alerts.  Is it possible to unclear a cleared alarm?  Maybe disconnect and reconnecting the host?

We use monitoring to generate helpdesk incidents.  I want the alarm to trigger again so it creates a new incident in our helpdesk software.

Thanks.

How much retention is there on the DRS and vMotion logs

$

Hi Experts,

I have been asked to produce the last 6 months off all the vMotions between hosts in a cluster. More specifically, we are concerned with vMotions that originate from DRS. I looked at the history for DRS and it is very minimal (last 4 hours). I search through the DRS logs in the C:|programdata\vmware\VMware VirtualCenter\Logs\drmdump folder and was not able to interpret them. I looked in vCenter and attempted to browse through the logs here also. My question, is how much retention is there on the DRS and vMotion logs and is there a way to produce a report of this information showing the VM, time of each vmotion, if DRS initiated it or user initiation?

Thanks

Hey all,

I wonder if there is a way to send SNMP alarms  of plug-in manager?

For example I have an error on my update manager that says "plug-in is unavailable for the following server(s) :..."

I want those king of alarms as all the regular alarms will be sent to the SNMP server.

Thanks in advance,

Yev Berman.

Update Manager hangs at 75% downloading updates

I have several ESXi 5.0 hosts and I have update manager running on my vcenter server. However when update manager tries to download updates the download process stops at 75% and says scanning virtual appliance. I have a virtual load balancer which I'm wondering if it's trying to scan but getting hung up on. Is there anyway to determine why exactly it's getting hung up and get it to finish downloading?

Can login via web client but not via vsphere client

Hi,

I've come across a strange problem.

I've configured AD connectivity on vcenter server appliance with no issues. Changed root password through :5480. Changed administrator@vsphere.local through GUI on :9443. Rebooted each time the change was made. Added relevant AD group and set permissions...

I can login with the web client on :9443 using my AD credentials with no problems (i'm in AD group which has admin privileges through SSO).

I can NOT login with the vsphere client using exactly the same credentials :| It says the usal "you don't have permissions..."

I am able to login with vsphere client using administrator@vsphere.local :|

Any ideas?! Completely stuck...

Many thanks

4vCPU SQL VM - add another just for OS?

Good day all.

We had an issue today that cause a DB server (4 CPU SQL VM) to run at 100% CPU load.  I was able to get onto the RDP session but then it was too hard to navigate around due to slow response.  I was thinking of adding a 5th CPU and set the SQL affinity to only use 4 of the 5 CPU and reserve the 5th for the OS.  Thinking that if something like this happens again, I can still get to my troubleshooting tools.  What’s your thoughts on this?  Thanks in advance.

Upgrade Vcenter 5.5 to Vcenter 5.5 Update 1 fails

Today I've tried to upgrade one of our vcenter servers to the the latest version being update 1. This vcenter server has version 5.5 installed and certificates have been replaced with certificates from out internal CA.

I've updated every component seperately, but I have now following problems:

1) I can't login anymore with the Viclient. I get following error:

Error_Connecting_2014_03_28_13_33_56.jpg

2) I can login into the webclient, but I find a yellow bar at the top saying: Could not connect to one or more vCenter Server systems: https://the.vcenter.name:443/sdk

3) In the webclient: In the recent tasks I get following error: Unable to create the managed object for - urn:vmomi:TaskManager:TaskManager:C54DCD9D-4810-4F06-B3FF-88252259ED5E. This error is also found under VM Hardware.

4) In the webclient: I can't take over any VM's

What has gone wrong with this upgrade?

In the upgrade guide vmware is also speaking of service packs to upgrade, but I can't find them anywhere on the site. Does someone know if they even exist?

vCenter Web Client on High DPI Displays

$

I just received a new laptop, a Lenovo W540, which comes with a 3K display. The Windows 8.1 DPI settings were great and have resolved most issues with text and images being too small.

If I use IE11 to access the web client, the DPI is scaled and I can actually use the interface (although officially IE11 is not supported, which is my main concern). When using Firefox, Chrome, etc,  I am unable to zoom the interface to a useable level. What is even more strange is that the vCOPS interface DOES zoom like I would expect it to.

Has anyone else encountered this problem and found a workaround? Like I said, I would prefer to use an officially supported browser but technically IE11 does work right now. Any and all thoughts are appreciated, thanks!

hey guys I am new to the ESXi Vmware command line but am picking things up quickly.

we have a UPS that runs all our servers and I am wanting to add my ESXi server to the UPS auto shut-down in the event of a power failure,

following this guide http://www.petenetlive.com/KB/Article/0000275.htm

when I get to the command line after placing the software in the /etc/power

I type -

~ # cd /etc/power

/etc/power # ./SetupRA

then the shell returns

./SetupRA: line 172; rpm: not found

more: -c: no such file or directory

Do you accept the terms of licence agreement? [Yes/no]  ( I type Yes )

Installing Hp Power Manger Remote Agent

./SetupRA: eval: line 1: rpm: not found

./SetupRA: exit: line 1: illegal number: -1

any suggestions on what I need to do? can ESXi read RPM format natively or do I need to install any additional things on the server before running this?

Many Thanks.

Hi all,

I've got this trouble when adding Esxi 5.0 host to vcenter. This host right now is already added to vcenter inventory and on maintenance mode but everytime firewall on the host is enabled, the host marked as not responding and become connected again if i disabled the host firewall. I already confirmed that vcenter and the host using port 902 UDP for vpxheartbeat. This is really confusing...:( does anyone have solution for this matter, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I want upgrade my vcenter from 5.0 to 5.5 and in the same time i want migrate from a physical machine windows 2003 to a VM W2008 R2.
I have tried like this :
- Stop vmware service on vcenter 5.0
- Copy SSL directory in a temp directory
- Shutdown vCenter

- Create a VM 2008 R2 with the same ip

- Copy SSL directory in C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\

- Create DSN with the same database

- Install vCenter 5.5 on W2008 R2 and keep existing database

- Installation works but it's impossible to connect on vCenter by vsphere web-client or vsphere client

Any recommendations, experiences appreciated please !

vCenter Server Memory Sizing

$

I have a 2K8R2 VM running vCenter Server, SSO, Inventory Service and I just installed the Web client on it.  With the addition of the Web client I just can't throw enough memory at this box.  I've bumped it up to 16GB and it's still using almost every bit of RAM, with the task scheduler showing physical memory 95% used.  I have 3 ESXi hosts and about  33 VMs.

How much more RAM do I need to give it, or do I need to start imposing restrictions on how much the apps take?

Thanks

Issue with Web Client after upgrade to vCenter Server 5.5 U1: Empty inventory and message "Failed to verify the SSL certificate for one or more vCenter Server systems"

$

Hi,

after upgrading from vCenter Server 5.5 1476327 to vCenter Server 5.5 U1 1623101 (including Web Client, SSO and Inventory Service) we are no longer able to manage our infrastructure with the Web Client as no inventory is displayed. After logging on to the Web Client the following error is shown:

"Failed to verify the SSL certificate for one or more vCenter Server systems:"https://server.fqdn:443/sdk/

We have already checked KB 2050273 and found no duplicate instances of vCenter Server in SSO. Removing and re-installing vCenter Server, SSO, Inventory Service and Web Client did not help! We also checked KB 2036505 and deleted the *VcDirectory File from the Web Clients "SerenityDB" Folder. This did not help either.

What we haven't done so far is replacing vCenter Server certificates with new ones. We however don't want to this since this seems to be quite complicated and actually everything worked fine before upgrading vCenter Server to 5.5 U1. The vCenter Server is running on Windows Server 2008 R2. All components with the exception of vCenter SSL certificates and vCenter database have been installed from scratch in the beginning of this year during the transition from vCenter 5.1 to 5.5. There weren't any issues!

Any ideas what might cause this issue and what we could do to solve it?

Thanks
Michael

Vcentre server stopped reporting host resources

$

Hi

After a complete system reboot, due to the power being turned off, on 3 hosts (not clustered) one of the hosts has stopped reporting to vCentre server correctly.  I can manage VM's, start and stop them, create new ones etc but I can no longer see resources used.  Mem and CPU just show 0%, the other 2 hosts are reporting as normal.  The host in question is also the host the for vCentre server instance so I am wondering if this has some bearing on the situation?

Is it likely that this could be rectified without having to restart the host again?

I know I could disconnect the host from vCentre from the menu, but not sure if this would effect running vm's?

Regards
