New Backend DB for Vcenter

$

Hi Folks,

I have question concerning the Vcenter DB. Our VCenter installation runs on an Oracle Backend DB. This DB needs to be migrated to a new Server Hardware. During that migration time (approx. 1 1/2 hours) the DB needs to be offline.

My idea now was to disable all VCenter Services during that time to take the DB offline. After the DB has been migrated to the new Server I would point to the new Servername in the Oracle Client on the Vcenter Server and restart the services.

I am aware that I would not have any visibility or Services like DRS etc. available during the time the DB is offline. Do I miss something or is this a doable migration plan?

Thoughts, concerns and opinions highly appreciated.

Thanks...Andy

Web Client Plugin does not install

Hi,

on one computer I have the problem that the Plugin Tools for Firefox or IE do not install.

It is a Windows 7 64bit Computer. I tried it last week with the tools for 5.1 and now after the update to 5.5 the problem persists. I'm able to download them but when I double click to install, nothing happens at all. Other software may be installed without any problems on this computer.

Is it possible that something is missing on that computer ? Adobe Flash Player, C++ Runtime 2008 and 2010 are installed. The user has local admin rights.

Any ideas ?

vCenter upgrade from 5.5.0 to 5.5.0B - Big mistake?

We had a happy vCenter 5.5.0 server running on Windows Server 2008, until we made the mistake of upgrading to 5.5.0B. Shortly after the upgrade, the vCenter server was running smoothly. However, about 5 hours later, the server started being plagued by issues such as the inventory service consistently failing to start, inventory service logs eating up all available space (we are talking 50GB in a matter of a few hours), Veeam backups failing, vMotion failing, and a few other issues which I believe revolve around the inventory service acting up. I have been working with VMware tech support for about 5 days now and we are at a point where we are considering just rolling back to a backup prior to the upgrade to 5.5B and just stick to 5.5.

My question is, has anyone else tried an upgrade from vCenter 5.5.0 to 5.5.0B? Was the update successful?

vCAC 6.0 Build Profiles not working

Hello, and I apologize for my ignorance on all things vCAC but I am brand new to it.

I have vCAC 6.0 up and running and am able to deploy systems using it.  I have a baseline windows 7 x64 image that i have converted to a template for use in deploying VM's from.  This image has no policies or other software loaded on it, just a baseline image.  I have configured a build profile and a default naming convention of DEV-VCAC-#### for all of the clone systems to follow when they are made.  Currently when i deploy a system, however, none of the build profile information is being implemented.  The hostname is not changed to match what vcac assigns it in vcenter (and the name in vcenter is correct) nor is it joining the domain like it needs to.  I have checked all the network connectivity and it all seems to be correct.  I have also checked the logs on the windows virtual machine that gets created to see if it may have just failed the domain join,. and the logs show nothing.  I have included a few screen shots, and know i am using the FQDN but blocked it out for purposes of posting.

Any help you could provide, or even give me a direction to start prodding would be much appreciated.

Not sure if i'm posting in the proper place. I have 3 esxi 5.1 servers in a cluster. I have 2 terminal server Windows 2003 x86 guests that are causing me fits. The vmtools quit spontaneously and I get the above error, (I have attached a .jpg of the error). In order to get the tools to restart, I have to stop and restart the print spooler, then restart the vmtools and they will run fine for a period of 2-5 hours and then stop again. I have googled this till i'm blue in the face and have found nothing. Some more background...esxi 5.1 servers are brand new, all my guest server OS's were previously running on an esx 4.1 cluster. I have many terminal servers running different versions, I never had any problems with any of my 2008 R2 servers doing this, but had issues with 3 other 2003 x64 servers and the way I fixed them was removing some different HP universal print drivers. I have removed these drivers from these 2 servers that are still causing me problems. I don't get any other errors, the tools stop and the OS starts behaving sluggishly which is unacceptable in my environment. Please HELP !!

vCenter connection alarm on unmounted LUN devices

vCenter (5.1.0b) still triggers "Cannot connect to storage" alarms on all of the hosts in a cluster even though we unmounted the LUN device properly.

Is there a way to prevent these false alarms and only have them trigger when mounted LUN devices lose connection?

thanks

2 NODES Cluster with virtual vCenter (ESXi 5.5)

Dear All,

Recently I was asked to create a two nodes cluster, without any other physical server or storage.

I tried to create a cluser with vCenter on a virtual machine and for the replication, i installed VSA (all of the services are running on local users on the Vcenter).

The problem is:

When the ESXi which hosts the vCenter crushes, the Cluster service crushes too. That prevents vm's to migrate.

I tried to put all the VMs on one host and the vCenter on the other host, so if my vCenter's ESXi crushes, i dont care because the VM's keep working and if the VMs ESXi crushes, the VMs wil migrate to the Vcenter.

Yet, it didnt work. when the VMs ESXi crushed, the cluster datastore didnt response (disconnected) and the VMs didnt migrate.

Some information about the environment:

Two HP DL360P nodes (900GB SAS, 2*8cores)

No storage.

No other physical server out of the nodes.

Hope you will find a solution, because i couldn't.

Thanks,

Datastore VM Allocation

$

I recently added a couple of new datastores to my VMware SAN and went about migrating some of my virtual machines to provide more space on my existing stores when I noticed something odd.  I use a numeric method naming all of my datastores VMFS# starting with 1 through however many I will end up with.  On VMFS1, and only VMFS1 I am seeing a number of what I can best describe as "echo" virtual machines that are located on other data stores.  What I mean is that I have a virtual machine that is on VMFS3, but on VMFS1 I also see the same virtual machine, which is a single disk system.  The machine was originally configured as 30GB.  On VMFS3 I see that the system is provisioned as roughly the 30 GB, but it is showing as about 25GB used, and the used allocation is at its maximum.  When I look at the same VM on VMFS1 I again see that 30GB is provisioned but for used I am seeing 0 of 25GB.  I see this happening with about 10 virtual machines.  I have another VM that on the non-VMFS1 location I have an 70GB provision and a maxed 41GB used, then again on VMFS1 I see the same thing but with a 0 in the used.

I tried experimenting with a non-critical system that was showing this duplicate.  I moved the source VM which was not on VMFS1 to one of the newest datastores that I created, which it migrated successfully.  The instance on VMFS1 was still there and when I attempted to move that one as well to the same datastore, it instantly ended successfully but did not move the instance.  I did not try moving it to a different datastore.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on and how to consolidate these multiple instances back to a single one?  This is affecting virtual machines of different sizes, usually 30-80GB, using thin provisioning.  I have other VMs that are larger (150GB) also thinly provisioned that are not experiencing this issue but are also not at their "used" capacity.  Thanks!

Vcenter troubleshooting

Hi gurus

More help needed

1) When I open Vcenter web client I get the following errors

                  a) client is not authenticated to VMware Inventory service ( attachment)

                  b) Unable to create the managed object (attachment)

  I have tried the following

     a) Restart the Inventory Service (no avail)

     b) Restart the Vcenter server (no avail)

     c)  Vmware KB 2033620 ( no avail and some errors)

           1) error

                  "Using C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\Inventory Service

                  VMware vCenter Inventory Service

                  Inventory Service already stopped.

                  Intializing registration provider...

Getting SSL certificates for https://server FQDN:XXXX/lookupservice/sdk

          Unexpected status code: 404

          Return code is: ServiceNotResponding

          2

Error 2 registering with https://serverFQDN:XXXX/lookupservice/sdk. Cannot continue.

          2"

so at this point I need some serious help to get this fix

     1) how do I go and check if the sso instance is on my local machine ( i did not setup this Vcenter) but there has to be a way to find this out, if the          instance is local or where is it pointing to.

      2) what else could be happening with this two errors and if someone has an idea.

Thanks a bunch gurus

Load-balancing with Heartbeat?

$

Having never used Load-balancing with vCenter or Heartbeat, I was wondering:  Can you use the 2 together?  This is related to my previous post, if Linked Mode becomes nonviable, I still have to provide a highly redundant solution and - tbh - the load-balancer itself becomes a single point of failure.  So I was wondering - hypothetically, like - if I could have 2 load-balanced vCenters at different sites, 200-300 miles apart, protected by Heartbeat - would that work?

New vCenter VM and need to connect to an ESX1 4.1 host.

Hello all,

I am under a not difficult situation in my enterprize environment, but someho I am very confused after some hours of trying.

Currently I have an ESXi 4.1 host with some VMs on it. One of these VMs is the vCenter server which had been upgraded to version 5.1 some months ago. The vCenter Server runs on a Windows Server 2003 64-bit VM.

Two days ago I decided to upgrade the vCenter from 5.1 to 5.5, but unfortunately the version 5.5 doesn not run on a Win 2003 server. So I installed a new VM with Windows server 2008 R2 and the plan is either to migrate everything from the old vCenter to the new one, or just connect the new vCenter server with the host (I do not run any complicated envirnment, I have only 5-6 VMs and the only thing I would need from the old vCenter is some snapshots, but I do not care if I don't get them).

First of all, I installed the new vCenter (5.5) and I connected it to the host. I logged in with as administrator@vsphere.local and I was able to see the vCenter server there. I added my domain account in the Administrators group and the VCOAdministrators group, but when I log in with my domain account I do not see any vCeter server there.

Now, what I want to ask you is: You read above what I want to do. What would you do if you were me?

Thanks in advance for all of your answers.

Renaming AD Group or USer breaks access?

$

I have had a strange thing happend in our 5.1 environment.

A specific AD user group had admin access to the whole environment. After renaming this group in AD and some waiting time, the access was still possible, but this groups members could not see anything else then the vCenter in their client. I thought, the SSO server is contacting the AD for any user logon procedures. The waiting time whos that there is still some replication happening and the permissions are not using the AD ID of the user but its exact name. Are there any way to rename groups and not to loose the permissions?

Hi, I have an installation of Cisco custom esxi 5.1. I set the root/pass and can login to the esxi gui fine. But, when I ssh into the same host using the same username/pass it says it is denied. Shouldn't they be the same? Am I missing something here?

Support for the vCenter database running on a SQL 2012 AlwaysOn Availability Group?

$

I run into this question a lot, especially now that folks are deploying more and more SQL 2012 AlwaysOn Availability Groups.  Does VMware support the vCenter database running on a SQL 2012 AlwaysOn Availability Group?  I know that vCenter 5.5 now supports SQL 2012 AlwaysOn Failover Clustering (with a shared LUN in RDM mode), but I can't find any support statements regarding SQL 2012 AlwaysOn Availability Groups, which make use of Microsoft's replication technology rather than shared LUNs.  Does anyone know if VMware has an official statement on this configuration for vCenter?  (Also for extra credit, how about Update Manager, SRM, and the VMware View Events database?)

Thanks,

Bill

Deploy from template - select network

$

Without going into too many details... here is my dilemma -

I have 2 templates - 1 for Server 2008 R2 and 1 for Server 2012. Both templates have one NIC that is attached to the "Server VLAN". Recently, this server VLAN was split up and configured as "Server VLAN - Dev" and "Server VLAN - prod". It seems as though I have two options:

1. Create prod and dev templates for both 2008 R2 and 2012. The Devs would be attached to "Server VLAN - Dev" and prod to prod. Thus I would end up with 4 templates to manage instead of 2.

2. Stay with two templates, assign the NIC to the Dev network and add a step to our deploy document that has you select "Edit Virtual Hardware (Experimental)" on the final page during deployment. As long as we chose to deploy to our prod cluster we can easily modify the NIC to use the prod network.

*I should mention that I am using custom specs which is why it is important to have the correct network assigned when deploying so it can complete the setup.

Now I obviously have concerns with both options...

1. I don't want to have to manage twice as many templates (if we add more templates I will have to have 2 versions of each)

2. This seems more of a workaround and the checkbox being used says "experimental" which concerns me.

Why can't the deploy VM from template option include choosing a network for the VM? With multiple clusters and networks it becomes difficult to manage templates. Once you select your cluster (Prod/QA/Dev/etc) it could then populate the valid networks and voila!

Am I missing something or not thinking further outside the box? Please help!

Thanks,

-Adam
