P2V for efi-based linux (debian stretch)

$

Hi,

I have a minipc based debian stretch linux server that I want to migrate to my vmware esxi hypervisor 6.7u2. For that purpose, I have tried the converter, but it reports "The destination does not support EFI firmware". I tried to search for solutions, but the solutions I have found range from "it should work with virtual machines >11" to disabling the EVC mode in the cluster which as far as I can see does not even exist on the free esxi hypervisor. After some frustration, I have tried to dd the harddisk to an usb stick and tried to convert the raw image to vmdk with qemu. This didn't boot either.

I'm really glad for any suggestions how to move this physical machine to the esxi server.

Thanks!

access denied

I am trying to create a virtual machine using VMware vcenter converter stand alone on a windows 10 machine.  I keep getting permission to perform denied when I ever I select the local machine.  I started to do this a few minutes ago and I discovered my hard drive did not have enough space to make a virtual machine so I stopped.  I went back in to restart the procedure and no I keep getting the permission denied fault. I am pretty new to VMware so I don't know if it is something I am doing incorrectly or if its a windows problem?  Any body got a suggestion?

Dear all

Hi

i want to run proactive HA

my server is DL580 G10

i have download and deploy HPE_OneView_for_VMware_vCenter OVA file and add vcenter to that.

also i have installed HPE_OneView_4.20.01.01_ESXi_Z7550-96659.ova

my vcenter ip = 10.10.50.60

my  one view ip = 10.10.50.77

my HPE_OneView_for_VMware_vCenter  = 10.10.50.78

now from Menu- Administrator - HPE one view for vmware vcenter - server integrations:

in this part we can see to tabs : Oneview - servers

in the server tab i added my esxi host (this is lab and i have just one esxi host )

in the one view tab i insert hpe one view ip and creditional  (10.10.50.77)

but during registering show : Error while registering Hypervisor Manager or Oneview

how can solve the problem ?

vCetner 6.7 U2 VUM not detecting VM Hardware version 15

$

I'm having an issue with vCenter 6.7 U2 not listing and detecting that VM Hardware version 15 is an option.

All of my hosts are running the latest build of 6.7 released a few days ago, and the issue is still present even in this build (also present in initial 6.7 U2 build)

If I select my cluster, go to updates, and then select VM Hardware, it's incorrectly reporting my "Host compatibility" and "VM compatibility".

All of my VMs have been upgraded to version 15, but are still listed as version 14.

Regardless of how I configure my "Default VM Compatibility", all my VMs show the "Host compatibility" as version 14.

Running a "check status" for a VM results in an error message and the task failing.

The error message is: "Errors during the scan operation for virtual hardware upgrade"

Is anyone else having this issue?

Thanks

HP Proliant DL360 Gen9 + VMware ESXi, 6.5.0, 8294253 = Host hardware fan status error reading 0 RPM for empty fan bays

This issue does not show up on VMware ESXi, 6.5.0, 7967591 (U1). Once I upgraded to U2 the erroneous issue shows up.

iLO shows Fan 1 & 2 are NOT installed

2018-05-10_10-09-01.png

host (and vcenter) shows them as installed with 0 RPM reading

HP support keeps pointing me to the URL (Using HPE Custom ESXi Images to Install ESXi on HPE ProLiant Servers | HPE ) which I reassured them I used to update 6.5 U1 to 6.5 U2. Reset logs/sensors doesnt work as well.

I checked HCL and the server build is most definitely on it but i guess thats just a grey area until its verified.

Oh happy days.

Anyone having the same issue?

Ubuntu 18.04/18.10/19.04 open-vm-tools screen resize broken

$

I've been running Ubuntu 18.04 on ESXi 6.7 for months. I open the host in VMRC and stretch the screen to a comfortable size.

Somewhere in the last few updates to 18.04, something broke open-vm-tools ability to resize the screen. It reverted back to an 800x600 size and nothing larger was available in the settings, which I'd never even had to look at previously. I checked for updates to open-vm-tools and found nothing, dug around a bit and found various threads. Following the advice to add "After=display-manager.service" to /lib/systemd/system/open-vm-tools.service. That allowed me to stretch it some, but it's still maxing out too small.

I then started looking at threads to add modes to xrandr, and added modes for 1440x900 and 1920x1080.  It seems to switch to them, but still not large as it should be.

Next I took a shot on upgrading to 18.10, where the problem still existed, and then to 19.04, again with the same problem. I added the modes again in 19.04, but after a reboot they are gone. I did find that the open-vm-tools.service file had lost the After line again so I added it back. Still exact same problem.

Has to be some new bug in open-vm-tools with latest kernels or modules?

Datastore showing full?

I have a VM that is using 50GB of data on a 2TB datastore, however the datastore shows full at 2TB.

Things that I have checked:

  • The VM is thin provisioned (both drives)
  • I did a storage migration and back to original datastore
  • There are NO snapshots
  • Compatibility version ESXI 6.7 (lastest)
  • VM version 15 (latest)
  • VMware tools are up to date (latest)

Why am I showing that I'm using 2TB of data when I am only using about 50GB?

vmware vcenter convertor

I converted a local windows 10 machine on vmware vcenter convertor to a portable hard drive.  It completed without any errors, I then moved it to the machine I want to run it on,   but when I try to power it on I get the error failed to power machine, could not be locked. " Cannot open disk," path to the virtual drive, "or one of its snap shot disks it depends on"  see attached file for the exact message.  Anyone know what I am doing wrong?  I am pretty new to vmware obviously and could use some help.  Thank you.

Download size unknown in OVF deployment wizard

Hi,

I am deploying a VM using OVF template in vCenter [vSphere Client version 6.5.0.13000]. The OVF and VMDK(~12GB) are on my local machine. I have a couple of queries in the OVF deployment wizard:

  1. What does Download Size mean?

     a. Is it the VMDK size? But then why is VMDK size populated?

     b. Is it download size over the network if I provide an OVF URL instead of selecting a local file?  [Tried that too. still, it is Unknown]

     c. Is it because the VMDK size is too large and there is some sort of internal timeout to compute and fetch the size of the VMDK from the browser? [Tried a smaller VMDK though, still, it was Unknown]

     2. Why is thin provision size not known prior to installation? Thick provision is known from the OVF file configuration itself. It is too early to say anything about how much size it will actually take?

Please spread some light on this.

Attaching a screenshot for reference. Please let me know if any more information is needed.

Cannot enable Log Browser

I don't know what I'm missing here. I'm logging on to my vCSA installation via PuTTY in an attempt to enable the Log Browser vSphere Web Client plugin according to this article: Enable the Log Browser Plug-In on the vCenter Server Appliance.

In both my lab environment and in my primary vSphere environment, when I drill down to /usr/lib/vmware-vsphere-client/plugin-packages, there is no logbrowser directory to open. I therefore can't rename the appropriate file required to activate the Log Browser plugin.

What am I missing? See attached screenshot of "dir" when I drill down as far as I can:
