Do logical processors constitute as pCPU's for calculating pCPU to vCPU ratios?

I have been trying to get a solid answer of what constitutes as a pCPU.  In vCenter, if you click on a cluster > summary you get a total of "Processors."  This number, however, is the summation of core count for all the hosts in the clusters.  In the article from zdnet (http://www.zdnet.com/virtual-cpus-the-overprovisioning-penalty-of-vcpu-to-pcpu-ratios-4010025185/) he mentions that logical processors (when hyperthreading is turned on) are to be counted as pCPU's when determining your pCPU to vCPU ratio for CPU Ready Times (or the vm processor scheduler).

 

Ultimately, this is what I am trying to determine (i.e. what my pCPU to vCPU ratio is).  We have a lot high of CPU Ready Times and I'm trying to determine how much net new hardware (pCPU's) I need to order (please consider that we are already pursing right sizing vm's and do not need information on ready times per se; rather, just trying to get the low down on what constitutes as pCPU's here and/or how the VM scheduler works with logical processors).

I am trying to find out if i have 3 hosts running vmware free hypervisor 5.1, what would it take to have a vcenter and cost of licensing for the same. I know i need 3 seperate vmware server licenses.

Moving guest from a vCenter cluster to a standalone host.

I have a question about the best method to move guests from a vCenter cluster to a standalone VM. I have four (4) guest I need to move off my vCenter cluster to a standalone VM host.  My system is configured as follows: my vCenter consists of three (3) host vm1, vm 2, & vm3 all running ESXi 5.5 Enterprise and the standalone is vm4 running ESXi 5.1 (not licensed for vMotion). The vCenter, vm1, vm2, & vm4 use SAN storage for the Data Stores, and vm4 uses local storage only. The four (4) guests have provisioned storage of 27 GB, 44 GB, 44 GB , & 590 GB. I was going to remove vm3 from the vCenter and add vm4 then vMotion the guest to vm4 and local storage.  But since vm4 is not licensed for vMotion I need a new strategy.  I am looking for options and advice.

 

I thought of power them off then coping the guest folders from the SAN to a external hard drive then coping them from the external hard drive to the local storage on vm4. I am concerned about the time to copy the 590 GB folder twice as these are production guests. The other option I thought of is to create the guest on vm4 with the use existing disk option and point to the Date Store on the SAN, if I can get vm4 to see the SAN.  Anyone have an easier or better option?

Multiple vCenter Instances

We have vCenter running here in Orlando which is a nicely consolidated w/ all our hosts / vm's / templates / etc etc etc. Now we want to stand up a vCenter instance in London and I think I was told that we can link London to be visible to vCenter in Orlando vCenter which allows us to see the primary ORL vCenter cluster as well as import London. Is this possible?

Determine what template a vm was cloned from.

I am trying to find what template was used to deploy certain vms, but cannot find anything in the get-vm properties that would show this.  I thought (in years past) I seen this somewhere? 

 

Any ideas?

vSphere 5.5 Linux Appliance LDAP

Hi,

 

I have a question regarding VCLA(vSphere 5.5 Linux Appliance) and LDAP. 

We need to connect our vCenter Linux Appliance to our LDAP Server.

 

Q1: does I need a SSO or can I configure the vCenter to use LDAP without a SSO?

Q2: If I need a SSO does the Appliance ship one ?

Q3: If yes. Witch document describe it ? I do not find a suitable doc

vCenter Shows VMware Tools Disabled

I have a few vm's on a host which show vmware tools installed but not running on Linux vm's. I don't have the ability to restart the vm's guest OS and was wondering if there's a way to start the daemon for vmware tools considering it's installed.

 

1. How do I enable vmware tools on Linux guest vm's?

2. How do I force vmware tools service to start upon boot?

Need vCenter / vSphere Book Recommendations

I've been asked by my boss to manage our new VMware environment. We're moving off Amazon's EC2 for in-house virtualization and I've stood up ESXi hosts and guests in the past but have never had full VMware vCenter features available to me. Since I will be the guy who needs to make 'x' work in VMware or make sure 'y' fails over to another host. I am just asking for any references for study material for understanding and maintaining a full VMware vCenter / vSphere 5.5.0 functionality / configuration / maintenance / and most of all features and common pit falls.

 

We're currently running VMware ESXi hosts on all new IBM hardware and shared storage (NFS).

 

Thanks for any recommendations for VMware books / material / references.

Remove all snapshot task hanged

Hi all

 

I am using vCenter 5.5 and trying to consolidate the snapshots for a VM. After I start the "Remove all snapshots" tasks, the task started for a couple of hours and hanged at 85%. After reviewing the task list, I realize there is a daily "Netapp create backup" task that started and trying to take snapshot on that consolidating VM that cause this issue. Now both the "Create virtual machine snapshot" and "Remove all snapshots" is hanged for over 12 hours . How can I kill both task without damaging the running VM

Installing SSO hangs on Configuring SSO Compnents

Hi guys,

 

I've been trying to install a fresh vcenter server with a simple install, but I can't arrive further than configuring sso components which will hang and rolls back after a long while.

 

Environment Windows Server 2012 R2 + VCenter 5.5 Update 1.

 

Any ideas?

Install vCenter 5.1 U2 SQL installation freeze during ExecuteStandardTimingsWorkflow

Hi All

 

I try to do an Update from vCenter 4.1 to vCenter 5.1 U2.

 

I start the Installation of vCenter Simple Install.

 

I select "Install a local Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express instance"

 

The Setup of SQL starts normaly. After a while, the Installation freezes during ExecuteStandardTimingsWorkflow.

 

The only Thing I can do is to kill the Task in the Taskmanager.

 

Have somebody a solution?

Scheduled task - restart vs reset

Good day all.

 

I want to create a nightly restart on a server via the vCenter Scheduled Task option.  Why is there a shutdown option and a hard reset option but not a restart option?  I could set this up with two jobs one as a shutdown and another as a power on but I want to have the restart perform as fast as possible.  While testing, on server took 20 seconds to shutdown and sat for 40 seconds until the next scheduled task kicked in (set to a minute after shutdown).  Also what happens in a situation that where the shutdown talks more than a minute?  Would the server never power on because it missed the power on window?

 

I guess my question is why is there only a shutdown option that leverages the VMware Tools but not a restart option that also uses the tools to perform a clean reboot?  I know I can also do this in Windows scheduled tasks but wanted to use vCenter 5.0.

vCenter 5.5 LDAP search group

Hi there,

 

after I successfully attach the vCenter 5.5 (VCLA) to our LDAP I need help regarding the permission and group configuration.

 

One problem is that all users there are in the base DN container can successful connect to the vCenter.

But we need that only users there are in a special LDAP-usergroup(vCenter-Admins) can connect to the vCenter.

Q1: Where I can configure that ?

 

Another Problem is that I can not browse the users in the -Single Sign On / Users and Groups / Domain (LDAP)

-->Error: Invalid principal:

Q2: Where can I configure the principal ? It must be the special LDAP-usergroup(vCenter-Admins)

Roles and permissions propagation question

Hello everyone

 

Hopefully, someone of you can probably help me or clear some things.

 

Imagine the following situation. We have a VMware cluster based on vCenter Appliance 5.5 with 2 hosts (Version 5.5 Update 1) attached. Both ESX hosts are joined to our Active Directory domain.

I have created a custom role named "VM Site Admin" on vCenter with some permissions we would like to give our site administrators. Then I have added permissions with this role to a AD group named "GG_VMSiteAdmin" at top level (vCenter server) with propagation to all child objects.

 

I can successfully log in to the vCenter server using a user which is member of the AD group "GG_VMSiteAdmin". So far so good. What I'm unable to do is to login directly to the ESXi host using the same domain credentials. I got the message "You do not have permissions to login to the server: servername".

 

What am I doing wrong?

Unable to set Gateway in ESXi through Answer File

Hello All,

 

We have vCenter implementation in our production environment. We are using AutoDeploy Server to deploy esxi on the servers in there.

 

One problem I recently came across was that, for subsequent reboots the ESXi loses gateway information. This seems appropriate since VMware has suggested that they would not store gateway setting in Host profile in latest versions.

 

However I am trying to find a work-around here. For specific reasons we cannot have static ip associated with ESXi since, we are piggy backing networking from older infrastructure.

 

I wanted to ask whether, I can set Gateway through answer files specifically? I have tried to explore this possibility through certain modifications, but havnt been successful as of yet. Appreciate your comments in advance.

Getting message Insufficient Permissions to Retrieve Data when I try to access Update Manager in vCenter 5.5

I recently upgraded to VMware 5.5 and I am having an issue with Update Manager to where It says I don't have permissions to use it.  The plug-in installs fine without errors.  I have myself setup as an administrator but it still won't let me use it.  I am using vCenter to administer my hosts.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

How to interpret VCenter memory and cpu performance counters

Background:   I need accurate measurement of VM memory utilization for billing and capacity planning.

The issue:   The  CPU and Memory  stats reported by VMware vCenter and the definition of the stats in the documentation do not match.

 

What we are reading:

1.      We are reading the Daily, Weekly, Monthly and Yearly stat values from the vCenter database from the database views:

             -  VPXV_HIST_STAT_DAILY, VPXV_HIST_STAT_Weekly, VPXV_HIST_STAT_Monthly  VPXV_HIST_STAT_Yearly

2.      We are reading the stat_values for  stat_group ‘mem’ and for stat_name ‘usage’ and ‘consumed’

3.      Note that we cannot get ‘Active’ mem stat-values because the default monitoring level is 1 and we cannot upgrade it 2 or above because of the potential performance impact.

(note alternately, I am using api to get these)

·       Consumed =  Amount of guest physical memory consumed by the virtual machine for guest memory. Consumed memory does not includeoverheadmemory. It includes shared memory and memory that might be reserved, but not actually used.

Usage =   Memory usage as percentage of total configured or available memory.  = active÷ virtual machine configured size
Our goalis to get the   ‘Active’ memory usage (without turning of level 2)  which according to documentation we should be able to get by the following formula:

                                                Active = ‘Consumed’   x  ‘Usage’

 

The actual datawe are getting  -  See sample below:

                As you can see the  memusagevalue is above 100 (which cannot be if it is a percentage).   Theconsumedvalue is consistent.

                (note we get the same data when we access via the sdk apis)

 

THE QUESTION:

How should we interpret the value ofmemory/usagestat value?

Upgrade from 5.1u1 to 5.5 - specifically SSO

Hi,

This may be answered else where but could not find anything definitive.  We are planning to migrate to 5.5.  Right now we have all components (with the exception of the web client service) on separate virtual machines.  For our upgrade process we planned on consolidating. If the 5.5 sso is installed on the same Windows virtual machine as the Virtual Center, at what point do we shut down the existing separate 5.1 sso virtual machine?  Is it even relevant?

The plan, if all goes well is to install all of 5.5 in one continuous operation...that is install sso, then the   5.5 web client, then the Inventory Service, vCenter server and finally VUM.

Am I over thinking this?

Any ideas thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

How to block port 80

In my company we need to close all 80 ports, and one of them is used by vcenter and hosts.

 

How can I block this ports and only use 443 port?

Minimale Rechte für das Klonen einer VM

Wir wollen hier einigen Entwicklern die Rechte geben, innerhalb eines neuen Ressourcenpools u.a. VMs zu klonen. Ich habe mir nun probeweise an einem existierenden Pool eingeschränkte Rechte gegeben. Dazu habe ich die Vorlage "Virtual machine power user" genommen und um einige Rechte erweitert. Ich bin dann nach dem Administratorhandbuch für vSphere 5.1 vorgegangen und habe folgende Rechte zugeteilt (kann man das Handbuch als Deutscher eigentlich auch in der englischen Fassung runterladen?):

 

Virtuelle Maschine.Bereitstellung.Virtuelle Maschine klonen auf der virtuellen Maschine, die Sie klo-

nen. (Virtual machine.Provisioning.clone virtual machine)

- Virtuelle Maschine .Bestandsliste.Aus vorhandener erstellen auf dem Datencenter oder dem Ordner

der virtuellen Maschine. (Virtual machine.Inventory.Create from existing)

- Virtuelle Maschine.Konfiguration.Neue Festplatte hinzufügen auf dem Datencenter oder dem Ordner

der virtuellen Maschine. (Virtual machine.Configuration.Add new disk)

Ich denke mal, ich habe die richtigen englischen Punkte gefunden. Ich habe meinem User diese (und noch weitere) Rechte am DataCenter, einem Datastore, dem Ressourcenpool und einem Netz gegeben. Wenn ich nun eine Maschine klonen will, bleibe ich beim 2. Schritt hängen (Host / Cluster: On which host or cluster do you want to run this virtual maschine?). Da erscheint dann nur unser DataCenter und der Button "Next" ist ohne Funktion.

 

Was mache ich falsch?
