VCenter Alerting - Sending Alarm outside to external Source

$

So... I'm trying to configure alarming in Vcenter to send certain alarms to our external ticketing system, via the 'cmd' option

We use a perl file that executes to do this.  The problem I run into is, I cannot get the alarm variables to work which would give me the 'alarm type' 'target name'etc...

Any ideas?

I'm using the following right now and can get the ticket update, again just know variable data to come with it

We are using VCenter Version 5.0.

Below is what I use today to get the alarm to trigger, which works. I need to know if there is another alarm variable I am supposed to use, or in a different location/format " { # before the variable name etc....

VCenter

Alarm- Host and Power Connection

CMD - c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe /c c:\vcenteralerts.bat

Then within the bat file I have my perl script:

perl c:\system\bin\scripts\almcity.pl us 26 error 1 "Test Alarm" "Test Alarm"

(The quotes contain the data that is placed in 2 fields in our ticketing system)

I need to know if I need to enter the variables in the script/ batch file/ or on the cmd itself and what variable works in 5.0 and what format I should you. Do I need to place special characters around the variables I choose?

thanks for any help.....

Is there a report that can recommend disk usage from current usage (including vcops, chargeback, capacity planner, etc)?

Hi Experts,

Currently, all the VMs are thick provisioned. I would like to start a reclaiming project to thin provision many of the VMs.

Is there a report that can recommend disk usage from current usage (including vcops, chargeback, capacity planner, etc)?

Currently, vcops has a report for configured vCPU and Memory, and recommended vcpu/memory, but nothing for disk/storage usage. Thanks.

Followed the steps as per the KB > VMware KB: vmware-vpxd service fails to start in vCenter Server Appliance but could not able to resolve the issue.

The vCenter appliance is part of a domain. The AD domain is added as Identity source in SSO server. I do not see vCenter server listed, if I login with administrator@vsphere.local because vpxd fails to start.

Any help would be much appreciated.

vCenter architecture to suit multiple organisations

$

Greetings,

We are deploying a new vSphere infrastructure which will accomodate multiple organisations.

The vSphere infrastructure will all be at the same physical site.

We need to be able to delegate management of the vSphere resources for a specific orgnaisation to the admins in that orgnaisation.

The underlying hardware (ESX servers, storage, etc.) will be shared.

Security between organisatioins is not critical since they are agencies of the same over-arching organisation.

The organisations have different network needs and IP addressing schemes

Can I get advice from anyone involved with multiorganisation vSphere deployments on the pros and cons of going about this.  At the moment I'm thinking about two options:

1.  Single datacenter, one ESX host cluster per organisation with admin rights delegated at a cluster level.  Separate vSwithes for each organisation.  Shared storage.

2.  Single datacenter, one ESX host cluster only with hosts for a particular organisation gathered into folders and management rights delegagted at the folder level.  Distributed switch to host all networks.  Shared storage.

Can anyone recommend a good strategic vCenter deployment guide which covers some of the issues raised above.

Many thanks

while accessing vcenter 5.1 or ESXi host via browser, ssl certificate always show error and an option to allow user to ignore this and continue. do let me know from where this will be resolved.

There are of 40 host in our environment and all are using local authentication in order to get admin access. its cumbersome to manage all 40 root passwords, at some time they needs to reset. Please advice shall we switch to centralized user management like AD or any other idea.

here, vCenter Server is configured on Virtual machine. as a best practice, is it ok to leave vCenter on VM or must be isolated physical or logically like cluster.

Changing the vCenter windows local Administrator password

Hello,

I  recently changed the vCenter windows local Administrator password, and it seems that vCenter is no longer able to connect to VDP.  In VDP the only error message I seem to get is:
"Failed to retrieve the storage information on the appliance" in the vdp-configure interface.

Is there a more correct way to change the local Administrator password then I used?

vMotion Priority for individual VM

$

Hello,

I have a question around individual VM vMotion settings.  Here is the current setup and desired result.

Setup:

  • ESXi 5.1 ENT+ cluster & 5.1 vCenter
  • Dedicated 10Gb vMotion vLAN
  • Storage I/O configured
    • High priority VMs have higher shares

Situation:

  • During a host entering maintenance
    • All the VMs try to vMotion onto different host at the same time (automatically determines how many simultaneously)
      • High priority VM are now trying to fight on the same level as normal or low priority VMs for vMotion bandwidth/resources

Desired Result:

  • Set a flag on high priority VMs that they are always moved with preference during a vMotion (I know this can be done if you move individual VM [standard or High priority] options during vMotion)
    • This way (for example) if there is a transactional DB, it is vMotioned first with protective shares before a file server

Any suggestions?  I have not found anything yet but hopefully there is an advanced parameter I can set on a VM.

Thanks

So I've only got one host with 7 VMs but a buddy of mine said to install Vcenter to manage these VMs. So now I did but I wanted to know what benefits I just gained by doing this?

I log into Vcenter to use my VMs versus my Hypervisor IP now.

At the same time I am trying to learn as much as I can about VMware stuff...

Thanks in advance!!

Hi to all,

I want to movehosts fromvc 5.1 to new vc 5.5

I've export vDS 5.1 from vcenter 5.1 to vcenter 5.5

I've moved and added 4 Hosts without problem to new vc 5.5 and vDS

Now when I try to add the last 2 hosts to vDS I received this error:

vDS operation failed on host esx06.sf.local,  got (vim.fault.ResourceInUse) exception

vDS operation failed on host esx07.sf.local,  got (vim.fault.ResourceInUse) exception

How can I move the last hosts?

Thanks to all for any suggestions.
