Helo,

we have increased the statistic level for performance data and since then the Web Client is very slow.

Then we have decreased the statistic level and shrink the database, but still we have perfomance Problems with the Web Client.

The vSphere Client works fine.

VMware vCenter 5.1 to 5.5 U1 Upgrade and Distributed Switch - Question

$

We are planning to upgrade our vCenter 5.1 server to 5.5 U1.  We are using a distributed switch (with LACP).  This will be the first time for us updating a vCenter server with a distributed switch.  Is there anything to be aware of?  Will the hosts and virtual machines on the distributed switch stay connected to the network during the vCenter upgrade?

Vcenter Heartbeat Managed IP & Physical to Virtual Networking

Ok, I have a couple of stupid questions.  BTW, I'm running 5.1 Update 2 and installing Heartbeat 6.6.  LAN replication.

Question #1: I am going to install heartbeat but I'm noticing that it requires a Vcenter Managment IP. Does this IP need to be the current IP of the VCenter Server i'm about to clone?

Question #2: My primary virtual center is a physical server and I'm going to clone to a virtual.  I've read through the documentation a couple times but I'm having trouble understanding the renaming of interfaces on the physical and virtual.  We are using DS switches, not standard on our VMs.  Do I need to create a new DS switch for a new UPLink port or do I just need to use the existing add two NICs to the VC VM that I cloned with the new network configurations.  Sorry if this question is confusing but it seems that going from Physical to Virtual configuration is not as straight forward as a virtual to virtual.

Thanks,

Billy

insufficient resources to satisfy configured failover level for vsphere ha

I get the following error "insufficient resources to satisfy configured level for vsphere ha" when trying to power on a w2k8 32vCpu 130gb virtual machine. vCenter/esx 5.0 u1.

Cluster consists of 16 hosts @ 4 socket 10 cores per socket and 260gb each. Admission control is enabled to tolerate 1 host failure. Average cpu usage for cluster is 11% and average mem usage is 24%.

Why can I not power it on with above settings and usage on the hosts which is low?

When I change admission control policy to "percentage of cluster resources reserved as failover spare capacity @ 25% cpu & 25% mem. I am then able to power on the virtual machine.

Thanks

VCenter 5.1 is not starting after doing a SQL DB move from one server to another.

After doing a backup and restore of the VCenter 5.1 SQL DB in to a different server. I have tried the following with no success

1. I have reconfigured the HOSTS file and successfully ping localhost

2. I have rebuilt the web.xml file with no success

3. I have checked the registry settings in the virtual center server for the DSN name consistency but I didn't see the DB in the registry key for the 64 bit. I only found it in the 32 bit location. Is this mean I have a 32 bit ODBC? I thaught a 64 bit ODBC was needed for Virtual Center server, I ahve to go back to my documentation and see why the discrepancy.

I have checked with our DB team and they concluded that nothing changed from the old DB location to the new DB location. They said they did a backup in the old location then a restore on the new location, but for some reason they needed to modify some permissions in order to make other DBs work.

At this point I ran out of ideas and I have no visibility to he DB, also i asked them to check if the log files were full and they said they are not.

I'm getting the below errors every time I try to start the virtual center service. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Windows could not start the VMware VirtualCenter Server on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 2.

Vmware VCenter 4.1 update 1 and adding an host ESXi 4.1 update 3

Hello -

I am currently running Vcenter 4.1 update 1 with 1 cluster running 6 ESXi 4.1 update 1 Host.  I was wondering if I am able to add another host to this cluster with ESXi 4.1 update 3. The reason for this is my hardware is only compatible with this version and need to add more resource to this cluster.

Auto Deploy Servers Missing Storage Adapters...

$

Hello,

This is my first attempt at setting up Auto Deploy and I haven't had much success finding the information I need online, so I'm here. My scenario is the following....

I have 2 blade chassis, 10 blades in each one. When I did a bare metal install of ESXI 5.5 on 2 of the servers I can see my blades HBA adapters just fine from vSphere Web Client and I can create my data stores.

When I use Auto Deploy and shoot an image to that same blade, I'm missing my Storage Adapters, the screen is blank. Now I have not provisioned the storage yet, so I'm hoping once I do and then reboot the server they will miraculously show up, but I won't hold my breathe. That being said, I know there is no hardware problem because wen I do bare metal they show up just fine. When you boot the server and watch them boot up, you also see the HBA's listed during boot.

So my question, is it normal with Auto Deploy servers to not see the Storage Adapters until you provision them on the storage? Or did I need to make a change to my host profile to see the adapters.

Keep in mind, once I did the Auto Deploy, I had already un-provisioned the disk from the storage end of things. I have not gone back yet to the storage and provisioned the storage yet, I'm just perplexed as to why the adapters don't show up by default.

Any help is appreciated.

vMotion between 4.1 cluster and 5.5 cluster

$

Our production now runs on a 4.1 cluster and on our old fiber-attached SAN with VMFS3.  We have 3 new, unused servers now in a 5.5 cluster with a new empty fiber-attached SAN with VMFS5.  Even though both these clusters have their vMotion networks in the same subnet, I don't believe vMotioning a live VM from old to new cluster is possible, mainly because 4.1 needs to be attached to both SANs.  Even with a VM turned off I don't think vCenter & vMotion is any help, and backup & restore of some kind is what's called for.  Am I right on all this?

I think what we should do is:  forget the new cluster, join the new 5.5 servers into the old cluster, use vMotion to migrate all VMs to the 5.5 servers but still located on the old SAN, cut loose the old 4.1 servers, add the new empty VMFS5 datastore, and storage vMotion the VM's to the new SAN (all done with the VMs running).  Not completely sure if 4.1 servers and 5.5 servers will work in the same cluster, but I think they can.  Old CPUs are AMD Opteron's and new CPUs are Intel Xeon's.  How does this sound?

Thanks for any advice....Lyle

Virtual machine console

Hi,

I'm looking for a technical document that describes how the virtual machine console works. It would be fantastic if this document explains that the virtual machine console works even if all the network interfaces of the virtual machine are disconnected. If possible with pictures, explaining the connection through the virtual infrastructure/sphere.

I've been looking for quite some time now, but haven't found a document that has a special chapter or sub-chapter about the virtual machine console other than that it is there.

Issues with Active Directory Identity Source

In one of my test environments, I tried to migrate vCenter from a vSS portgroup to a portgroup on my vDS. For some reason it ended up crapping out as soon as it pulled the vmnics from the vSwitch, but it never migrated my vCenter over. I was able to log into the host locally and detach the physical nics and reapply them to te vSwitch on the host. Now I have this weird issue:

I can log into my web client for my vcenter instance just fine using local and AD credentials, but for some reason I can't use my AD credentials on my fat client (C#) on several of my desktops. I even had one of my technicians attempt to log in as well and we both get an error message stating the connection times out.

Any idea what could cause this? By the way, my local credentials (admninistrator@vsphere.local) works just fine using the C# client but my AD doesn't.

Also, Is there something I need to keep in mind when I bring over my vCenter to vDS from vSS next time?

Resource Pools

$

Hi, I'm struggling to understand how when a vm is removed from a resource pool the shares decrease, taken from ESX 4 doc

"When you remove a virtual machine from a resource pool, the total number of shares associated with the resource pool decreases, so that each remaining share represents more resources. For example, assume you have a pool that is entitled to 6GHz, containing three virtual machines with shares set to Normal. Assuming the virtual machines are CPU-bound, each gets an equal allocation of 2GHz. If one of the virtual machines is moved to a different resource pool, the two remaining virtual machines each receive an equal allocation of 3GHz."

what am I missing? the resource pool has 6GHz whether there are two vms or three.  less vm mean they get a greater share available

Thanks

vCenter and SQL server Virtual Hardware Upgrade Stuck

vSphere 5.5

I've updated all of my vm hardware to version 10. All went great except for vCenter and the MSSQL VM. They both say the upgrade (succeeded) but I'm unable to vmotion the vms any where because of the following error:

A general system error occurred:

The destination host is not compatible with the hardware version to which the VM is scheduled to be upgraded. In order to proceed with the operation, VM's scheduled compatibility upgrade should be disabled.

I've done the following:

- shutdown both vms

- rebooted the host

- removed from host inventory and added to another

The following screenshot shows the success message on both VMs and it will not go a way. It is not present on any of my other VMsScreen Shot 2014-05-09 at 12.38.39 PM.png

Any ideas on how to fix this?

problem with NAT between vsphere client(or web client) and vcenter server

$

hi

i have problem when i want to connect to my vm and show the console window

my vcenter and my esxi server is behind the NAT

all of them has invalid ip address(172.20.20.0/24) and they have been NAT to the valid ip address

all of esxi servers added to the vcenter via their invalid ip address

i connected to the vcenter via a VALID IP ADDRESS

when i connect vcenter through vsphere client or vsphere web client i cant get console window and it doesnt show any thing just give an error for port 902

and when i connect the esxi hosts directly via their valid ip i can get console window and it does not have any problem

i know that via vcenter when i get console window , i directly connect to the ESXi host with valid ip address and problem is because of this, because  i connected to that vm via their invalid esxi ip (172.20.20.0) and i can not access to it

but i want to know is there any solution to solve this?

in vcloud director we have an option (VMRC) for solving this
