Freeing space in datastore after input/output error

We're running a VM in VMWare ESxi 5.10.

The machine no longer starts - we have this error: "There is no more space for virtual disk "myVM-000005.vmdk".

Consolidation fails with message: "A general system error occurred: Input/output error".

We don't have any snapshots in Snapshots Manager. The only vmdk file refernced in "myVM.vmx" is "myVM-000005.vmdk". However,  there are several other large vmdk files in the datastore: "myVM-00001.vmdk", "myVM-00002.vmdk" etc

My question is: would it be safe to delete "myVM-00001.vmdk", "myVM-00002.vmdk", "myVM-00003.vmdk" and "myVM-00004.vmdk" at this point, in order to create more space and have the VM running again? If yes, can I just delete these files using the contextual menu in the Datastore Browser?
