vCenter 5.5 vpxd failed to initalize after root partition filling up

I have a vCenter 5.5 appliance that isn't working correctly.  It stopped allowing logins from vSphere Clients (both Web and installed).  I investigated and found that the root (/ sda3) partition was full.  I found 2 log files eating up the space on the disk in the /var/log directory.  The first and biggest was the ldapmessages log file and the second was a cron log file.  I deleted both of them to free up space (now only 40% usage).  I rebooted the vCenter appliance and the vpxd fails to initialize.  I checked the vpxd.log file and saw LDAP errors.  I followed the VMware KB article 2044680 to rebuild the LDAP database but the errors persisted and vpxd still wont start.  I attached the vpxd.log file to the post and any help to get this resolved would be greatly appreciated.
