Svmotion Theory

Hi Guys

wanted to run a scenario past you to get your input and advice.

Enviroment

Vshpere 5.1

8 Physical Hosts

ISCSI SAN Network over 2 Procurve 3500YL

Vmotion Network over Core LAN

Guest Network over Core LAN

9 x HP P4500G2 Lefthand ISCSI SAN

Brief

At the moment we are seeing MASSIVE packet drops on our ISCSI SAN Switches, this is currently being investigated by HP.  Needless to say it is severely impacting our ISCSI performance which means our Svmotions, clones, Veeam backups etc are taking a very long time to complete (8 hours for a 300GB Svmotion)

It occured to me that i may be able to help alleviate some of this performance by ensuring our Svmotions go over our LAN switches (which are massive Cisco switches that are hardly reaching 5% utilisation).

So here is my thinking and please correct me if i am wrong.

As we are using HP Lefthand which is VAAI compatible any Svmotions etc are done over the storage network? If i were to turn off VAAI on the datastores until the problem with our ISCSI switches is resolved would that push our Svmotions etc over the "Vmotion" network (which in our case is running on our beefy Cisco switches)?

Any Input would be greatly appreciated.

Martyn
