Uploaded vCenter appliance from Fusion to ESX host but appliance doesn't boot on host

I have a vCenter appliance running in VMware Fusion and decided to upload it to one of my ESX hosts using the "Upload to Server..." menu item in Fusion.

The appliance arrived on the host but when I tried to start it, it tried to boot off the network and couldn't see its hard disks. According to the VM's settings, the hard disks were configured correctly, but they didn't exist for the BIOS and the appliance just didn't boot.

How can I upload my vCenter appliance to a host and get it working?

I tried the procedure twice with no different outcomes.

ESX 5.5.0

Fusion 7.0.1

vCenter 5.5.0
