How to Remove a Host from a Cluster when the Cluster houses the vCenter Server that manages the Cluster?

I have a vCenter Server Appliance (VSA), running on a VMware 5.5 Host.  The VSA manages the cluster that it resides in.
We've been running with only two Hosts and all local storage. We've purchased a SAN and now wish to enable HA and vMotion.

The Host that is running the VSA is not compatible with my other equipment; I've purchased 2 new servers identically configured to match the other (newer) server in my current cluster.
So I need to take the older host (the one that the VSA is running on) out of the cluster and add the new servers into the cluster (only have a 3 host license).

Here is what I'd like to do, but I can't see how this would work.

1.  Migrate all other VMs off the Host that will be removed from the Cluster, leaving only the VSA running on the Host.
2.  Shut down the VSA
3.  Connect to the Host with the vSphere Client
4.  Place the Host in Maintenance Mode
5.  Remove the Host from the Cluster
6.  Exit Maintenance Mode
7.  Restart the VSA   (The VSA would now be running on a Stand Alone Host outside the Cluster it manages??)

8.  Live happily ever after?

Will this work?  Any "gotcha's"?

Thanks!
