Just after some clarification on the process documented particularly in the Vsphere 4.0\4.1 document.
VMware KB: Removing a LUN containing a datastore from VMware ESXi/ESX 4.0 and 4.1
VMware KB: Unmounting a LUN or detaching a datastore/storage device from multiple VMware ESXi 5.x hosts
If the data contained within the datastore\RDM is not required to be kept can step 3 in the document be skipped or does the process still need to be completed for safe removal.
I was not aware of these documents in the past and to remove these before I use to just take them offline on the SAN and rescan the Storage adapters but never had issues, however after reading these and the nightmare of a possible All-Paths-Down scenario I just wanted clarification.
