Configuring HA - will adding vmkernel impact network communications?

Previously I had an ESXi host(4.1) with local storage and have added a NetApp SAN, a second ESXi host (5.1) and virtualized the vCenter(5).  The VM's have been migrated to the SAN, and I want to migrate the VM's to the new host so the original host can be upgraded to 5.1 and HA configured.

Our network is flat and the 4.1 host never had a VMkernel configured.  The 5.1 host does has a VMkernel configured.  I want to configure a VMkernel and vSwitch on the 4.1 host but it's hosting a production network that has very infrequent maintenance windows and I need to confirm if this can be accomplished without VM downtime.  Will the process of adding a VMkernel, vSwitch, and configuring HA result in any downtime?

I have been unable to find documentation that indicates whether a particular task will result in connectivity loss and with a virtualized vCenter I'm hesitant to make any changes, which is preventing the migration from being completed.

Thanks in advance.
