I have a quick question which I cannot seem to find an answer to. We recently upgraded a couple of our hosts to ESX(i) 5.5 and vCenter as well because we needed support for Server 2012 VMs. Anyway, I noticed something strange today when using the snapshot manager. When I take a snapshot of a VM and select the option to quiesce the VM using VMWARE tools, two snapshots are created. Only one of them seems to be active, indicated by its growth as the VM gets used and changes are made. The other snapshot seems to remain inactive.
When I take a snapshot without selected the quiesce option, only one snapshot is created. Why is there a difference? What does quiescing do differently? For what it's worth, I tried doing it both ways in an ESX 4 environment and only one snapshot was created regardless of the quiesce option being selected or not.
