This is my first post to this VMware community, so please bear with me if I'm missing something simple. I went to start a discussion to ask this question under vSphere, but for some reason I'm not able. I chose to follow vSphere community, but for some reason it is grayed out when I try to choose it to start a discussion. Any thoughts/guidance?
The real question I want to ask about vSphere is how to set up VLAN trunking on a single host (no vCenter) using the standard of vswitch. I find lots of links like this one http://www.rustyhann.com/ESXi-06-Create-vLAN.pdf that describe the process of setting up a trunk port on the switch, then assigning VLAN IDs to port groups on the ESXi host. When I change the switch port to be a trunk, I lose conductivity to the host, so I can no longer manage it. Also, on the host I don't see any VLAN IDs and I don't see any configuration that leads me to believe that the switch is informing the host (thru VLAN Trunking Protocol or some other means) which VLANs are available. I might be able to answer this question for myself I can get around the first issue. Any thoughts/guidance?
Thanks. Best.
